Kim Treiger-Bar-Am studied philosophy and then law at Yale University, and wrote her doctorate in law at St. John's College, University of Oxford. She has taught law in Israel for many years. Her previous books are Positive Freedom and the Law (2019), and Freedom and Respect in Jewish Ethics (2021).

Perl Grunzweig Memorial Lecture
Yossi Klein Halevi
'Israel at war and what October 7 means to the future of the Jewish people'
Yossi Klein Halevi is a senior fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. Together with Imam Abdullah Antepli of Duke University, he co-directs the Institute's Muslim Leadership Initiative (MLI), which teaches emerging young Muslim American leaders about Judaism, Jewish identity and Israel. Halevi’s 2013 book, Like Dreamers, won the Jewish Book Council's Everett Book of the Year Award. His latest book, Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor, is a New York Times bestseller. He writes for leading op-ed pages in the US, including the Times and the Wall Street Journal, and is a former contributing editor to the New Republic. His 2001 book, At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden: A Jew’s Search for God with Christians and Muslims in the Holy Land, will be reissued in 2019 by HarperCollins. His first book, Memoirs of a Jewish Extremist, tells the story of his teenage years as a follower of the militant right wing rabbi Meir Kahane, and his subsequent disillusionment with Jewish radicalism. The New York Times called it “a book of burning importance." In 2013 he was a visiting professor of Israel Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary, and served as a writer in residence at the University of Illinois. He was a senior fellow at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem from 2004 until 2010. Born in Brooklyn, he moved to Israel in 1982, and lives in Jerusalem with wife, Sarah, who helps run a center for Jewish meditation. They have three children.

Holocaust Survivor Miriam Freedman
'Surviving the Holocaust in a cellar in Czechoslovakia'
February, 1945 would have been the perfect time for Hungarian born 13-year-old Ivor Perl’s Bar Mitzvah but instead the barely in his teens lad stood under the cold snow hungry and desperate in the Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz.
Miriam Freedman was born in Bratislavia. Her life changed beyond recognition when the Nazi party came to power in 1933. Miriam and her immediate family survived by going into hiding, aided by those who put their own lives at risk to keep them safe.

Professor Saul Smilansky
'What is Crazy Ethics and why does it matter?'
Saul Smilansky (D.Phil., Oxford) is a Professor at the Department of Philosophy, University of Haifa, Israel. He works primarily on normative and applied ethics, the free will problem, and meaning in life. He is the author of Free Will and Illusion (Oxford University Press 2000), 10 Moral Paradoxes (Blackwell 2007), and over one hundred papers in philosophical journals and edited collections. Saul is on sabbatical at Oxford until the end of July 2024. He is completing a book on "Crazy Ethics", the idea that much in morality seems true (or at least plausible) yet absurd. He is looking at examples and wondering what to do about all this.

Nicholas Martin
Writer and producer of the film 'Golda'
'Golda Meir & The Yom Kippur War'
Nicholas Martin was born and grew up in Sussex. He attended Brighton College, a boarding school, but struggled with academia and left without qualifications. He moved to London and worked variously as: a croupier, a laborer, a bouncer and a barman. In his early twenties he worked at sea as a deck hand and as a yacht captain. Between jobs he traveled in South America where he supported the Sandinista revolution. He helped build a school in the north of the country, which was destroyed by the Contra Terrorists the day after it opened. He began writing feature pieces about his travels and contributing to British newspapers including: The Sunday Times, The Guardian and various magazines. In 1988 he reported from Chile on the final days of the Pinochet regime. In 1989 Martin returned to London to take up a place at The National Film and Television School to study script writing. He graduated in 1992 and began writing for British TV. His first produced script was for the highly regarded BBC series Between the Lines, which won the BAFTA award for best series. In 1998 he wrote a total of 16 episodes of the ITV comedy drama series, Big Bad World. He continued to write for British TV, and contributed to Midsomer Murders, the popular whodunit series. In early 2014, producer Michael Kuhn read Martin's script Florence Foster Jenkins and optioned it the same day. Within a week, Stephen Frears had agreed to direct and within three weeks Meryl Streep signed on to play Florence. Florence premiered in 2016 and garnered two Oscar and four Golden Globe nominations. In 2017 Martin began work on Golda, the story of Golda Meir's leadership during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. He interviewed many of the key figures, still living, who commanded the war including Zvi Zamir, the head of Mossad. His research uncovered a story that challenges received opinion in Israel that Meir was to blame for the "surprise" of the attack by Egypt and Syria forces. In 2019 Helen Mirren signed to play Golda and shooting completed at the end of 2021. Golda premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival and opened the Jerusalem Film Festival. In 2022 he began developing Upheaval, a true story about the creation of a music school in a Wisconsin prison in the 70s.

Julia Hollander
'Why we sing?'
Julia Hollander is a writer and singer based in Oxford. A love of music and words
inspired her first career as an opera director. In the 1990’s she was the youngest ever staff director at English National Opera, and the first woman to direct an opera at the London Coliseum. She went on to stage many more productions around the world, as well as founding her own contemporary music theatre company, Operate. During her time as a director, she regularly visited India to work with performers there, and this eventually culminated in her first book - Indian Folk Theatres (part of Routledge’s Theatres of the World series). Subsequent books were Journey through Campsfield (a collaboration with detainees at Campsfield Immigration Centre), When the Bough Breaks (a memoir about her severely disabled daughter, Imogen), and Chicken Coops for the Soul
(an inspirational memoir about the joys of keeping hens). She has written two plays for BBC Radio 4, When the Bough Breaks and The Kingsnorth Six, and a radio documentary about her family’s escape from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, The Letter. Singing has always been part of Julia’s life: from Indian folk songs to Jazz to Renaissance polyphony. Over the past decade, she has focussed these skills into her work as a song therapist and teacher, with a particular emphasis on singing with dementia sufferers. This in turn led to her latest book, ‘Why We Sing’, where she investigates the importance of song to our wellbeing, charting its extraordinary influence on all aspects of our spiritual, emotional and physical lives. Julia's father is a Czech Jew who fled the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia when he was a young child in 1938.

Professor Edith Elkind
Dr. Elkind joined the Oxford Computer Science Department in 2013. Prior to coming to Oxford she was an Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), where her research was supported by the National Research foundation (NRF) Fellowship. Dr. Elkind obtained her PhD from Princeton University in 2005, and was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Warwick, University of Liverpool and Hebrew University of Jerusalem, as well as a lecturer (Roberts Fellow) at University of Southampton. Prof. Edith Elkin won the 2023 ACM SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award, for her work on computational social choice & algorithms for cooperative games, and extraordinary service to the community.

'Herod and his sons'
Martin Goodman is a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, Emeritus Fellow of Wolfson College and Emeritus Professor of Jewish Studies. He has published widely on both Jewish and Roman history. His numerous books include Rome and Jerusalem (2007) and A History of Judaism (2017), and his biography of Herod the Great will be published by Yale University Press in the Jewish Lives series in March 2024.

Warden of Rhodes House, Professor Elizabeth Kiss
Before taking up the Wardenship in 2018, Dr Elizabeth Kiss served for 12 years as president of Agnes Scott College, Georgia. In December 2017, the Chronicle of Higher Education named Elizabeth Kiss on its 2017 list of the most influential people in US higher education. From 1997 to 2006 Dr Kiss served as the founding director of Duke University’s Kenan Institute for Ethics, and has published on moral education, human rights, ethnic conflict and nationalism, feminist theory, and transitional justice. Dr Kiss received her BA in philosophy, magna cum laude, from Davidson College in North Carolina, where she became Davidson’s first female Rhodes Scholar, going on to receive a BPhil (at Balliol) and DPhil in philosophy from the University of Oxford. She has held many leadership roles in local and national organisations, including the Climate Leadership Network, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and the Women’s College Coalition. She has always remained strongly connected with the Rhodes Community, having mentored Rhodes applicants for over 25 years and serving for 22 years on Rhodes selection committees, including six years as State Secretary in North Carolina.

Yom Hashoah - Holocaust Memorial Day
Hungarian Holocaust Survivor John Dobai
John Dobai, 89, lived through World War Two as a child in Nazi-occupied Budapest, Hungary. In 1944, Germany invaded Hungary, quickly introduced harsh antisemitic policies and Mr. Dobai's father was sent to a forced labour camp. All Jewish people in Budapest were forced to live in ghettos, wear yellow stars of David on their clothes and could not go to school. As the Soviets neared the country, the Nazis and Hungarian fascists commenced a brutal campaign of killings against the 60,000 Jews living in the "international ghetto" of safehouses. Mr Dobai's grandparents were two of 45,000 Jewish people who were massacred by gunshot and drowning in the Danube river, and two aunts and a cousin, who was just 17, were also killed. He and his parents were saved when the Soviets took control of the city before the killings were complete.

Dinah Rose KC is a British barrister. She has been President of Magdalen College, Oxford since 2020. A member of Blackstone Chambers, she was named Barrister of the Year in The Lawyer Awards 2009. In 2016, she was appointed a Deputy Judge of the High Court.
