Alec Nacamuli
'The Jews from Egypt'
Alec Nacamuli was born in Alexandria and left after the Suez crisis in 1956. He is an executive with a major IT services company, a council member of the Nebi Daniel International Association which strives to protect the Jewish heritage in Egypt and chairman of Sephardi Voices UK, an oral history project recording the lives of Jews from Arab countries who resettled in the UK. He is also a volunteer guide on Ancient Egypt at the British Museum.
Jews have maintained a permanent presence in Egypt for over 2,000 years and contributed significantly to the political, cultural and economic development of that country. From a community which counted over 80,000 in its heyday, less than 10 remain today… The talk will address their history, religious and family traditions, exile and how local state initiatives are beginning to acknowledge their passage.
