Truth in Jewish Thought

A weekly discussion on revelation, reason and the search for truth through Torah, Talmud, Jewish philosophy and Chassidic thought.

How does Judaism understand truth? Is truth received through revelation, discovered through reason, clarified through argument, or embodied in a way of life?

Truth in Jewish Thought is a weekly, text-led discussion examining how Jewish sources approach questions of truth, knowledge, faith, interpretation and disagreement. Each meeting begins with a focused question and a short selection from sources such as the Torah, Talmud, Maimonides, Jewish philosophy and Chassidic thought.

Where useful, related philosophical and religious perspectives may be considered in order to clarify what is distinctive about the Jewish approach. The discussion remains centred on Judaism and its sources.

The group is open to Oxford students, academics and members of the wider community with a sincere interest in Jewish thought. No prior knowledge of Hebrew or Judaism is required. Serious questions, careful argument and respectful disagreement are welcome.
