
The idea of the holiday of Rosh Hashanah is the concept that on the first of Hebrew month of Tishrei, it is the day of judgement. The biblical text states the following (Leviticus 23:24-25):
Speak to the Israelite people thus: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall observe complete rest, a sacred occasion commemorated with loud blasts. You shall not work at your occupations; and you shall bring an offering by fire to G-d.
The Mishneh however further explains (Rosh Hashanah 2a): ‘On the first of Tishrei, it is the New Year for counting years.’ The Talmud clarifies this is with regard to judgement (Rosh Hashanah 8a-8b):
