Oxford Chabad inaugurates NEW Torah scroll

Tuesday, 10 June, 2008 - 9:59 pm

Oxford University Chabad Society recently dedicated a brand new Torah scroll that was written in Israel and donated by an anonymous donor to Chabad of Oxford. The Torah scroll was completed by Rabbi Eli Brackman, director of the OU Chabad Society, who also trained as a scribe, together with the participation of about 50 students and community members.

Many students symbolically purchased letters in the Torah for family members, and assisted with the writing of the final letters of the scroll.

In a display of Jewish pride, the Torah was paraded under a Chupah around the heart of the city of Oxford accompanied by the singing of traditional songs, followed by an hour of dancing and festivities at the Slager Chabad Centre.

Community member Jude Comber commented, “The finishing of the Torah, and the dedication and inauguration of it, was a deeply moving event.”
