Sir Guenter Treitel's Kindertransport Recollections

P1040598.JPGProfessor Sir Guenter Treitel, QC, FBA, Emeritus Vinerian Prof. of English Law, All Soul’s College, Oxford, gave a lecture, entitled “Kindertransport: some recollections’, for the Oxford Chabad Society, on his experiences as a German-Jewish Kindertransport refugee who went on to become one of the most distinguished writers on the English law of contract, author of the seminal work Treitel on the Law of Contract.

 

His first memory, he related, was in 1933, when the Nazis rose to power. His father, a Berlin lawyer and notary, was deprived of his post, causing a noticeable reduction in income and forcing them to move to smaller quarters in Berlin. End of summer draws crowd to attend Jewish Studies Seminar at Oxford Chabad Society

As the intense season of conferences and summer schools draw to a close in Oxford, the Oxford University Chabad Society hosted a successful end of summer Jewish studies seminar “Yom Limmud” this past Sunday affording 40 students, faculty and community members the opportunity to listen to leading academics on a diverse array of Jewish topics of interest from philosophy, law and Ladino to Biblical interpretation, literature and the Talmud.
