Contemporary Jewish Review

Publisher: Maney Publishing (on behalf of the Oxford Chabad Society)

Aims and Scope

The Contemporary Jewish Review is an innovative international forum for the research of contemporary Jewish history, philosophy, mysticism, law and politics, with particular focus on issues of Jewish identity and ethics.

The CJR has grown out of the high profile and vibrant lecture series hosted by the Oxford University Chabad Society, and Butler11-04 009.jpgincludes contributions from scholars and commentators who have lectured at this institution. Like the lecture series, the CJR has a strong contemporary focus. This is to say that it aims to present research that is responsive to the contemporary contexts of Jewish experience.

As well as articles, the CJR will also include reviews of recently published scholarship within its respective areas of interest. The CJR will stand out distinctly from its competitors in the field of 'Jewish interest' journals by its specifically contemporary focus, topicality, and blend of insights drawn from the disciplines of philosophy, political science, and history.

These features together make the CJR unique and a much needed (and desired) addition in the field. The CJR will be published by Maney Publishers both as a print copy and online. The online version will be hosted on Maney’s standard platform, IngentaConnect.

Market

The CJR is international in orientation and will be marketed to an international readership. Our readers will include private individuals, who will desire both print copies and online access, as well as institutional subscribers, including libraries, Jewish societies, Jewish Studies institutes, and universities. Maney will promote the CJR to all Jewish Studies centres, and all the major institutions that subscribe to Maney journals.

Marketing routes have also been established by the Oxford Chabad Society, and these include extensive mailing lists and institutional connections in the Jewish world, as well as links to numerous university faculties in the UK, Israel, and North America and Chabad university campus groups in the UK and US.

Range  of Material

The CJR will include articles, review articles, and book and events reviews. There will typically be around six main articles and four or five book reviews in each issue.

Size/Frequency

The CJR is to be published bi-annually in the first instance: one issue every six months. Each issue will comprise 96 pages. By the third year of publication, we aim to move to three issues per year. Articles will typically range in length between 5000 and 10,000 words.

Subscribers

The Oxford Chabad Society is now seeking to enlist subscribers for the Review, the first issue of which will appear early in 2010. The Society intends to publish two issues in the first year and subscribers will receive these as a print copy together with online access. The price for a yearly subscription is £20.
