We are proud to present the screening of the film

"The Road to Jenin"

With French Jewish Filmmaker Pierre Rehov

Pierre Rehov will be present at the screening and give a talk about the movie.

Pierre Rehov (1952–) is a French Jewish film maker and novelist, most known for his movies which are almost exclusively based on the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Rehov was born to a Jewish family in Alger, Algeria, then a French colony, where he experienced terrorism at a young age. In 1961 his family moved to France with as many as 250,000 other Jews fleeing Algeria, which was to become independent the next year. He made later a film on the Jewish refugees (Silent Exodus) describing the fate of the million Jews expelled from Arab countries after 1948.

Rehov says he was not pro-Israel until 2000, when he saw the death of Muhammad al-Durrah on television, and doubted its authenticity. Since then, he has been working mostly in the Palestinian territories, and other Arab countries, including in Iraq, where he was embedded in the US army as a free lance reporter.

He, among others, requested an investigation into the murder of al-Durrah, in which he claimed that it was Palestinian gunfire that killed the child.

Since July 2005, Rehov has appeared on many TV networks including CNN, FOX and MNSBC. In January 2008, Rehov was embedded in the US cavalry in Baghdad, where he filmed hours of dailies, showing the situation in Iraq from the field.

Medieval Manuscript Viewing at Merton College

The library building in Mob Quadrangle, dating from 1373, is the oldest continuously functioning library for university academics and students in the world, comprising more than 70,000 volumes. The special collections include over 300 medieval manuscripts, personal papers of notable Mertonians, as well as early printed books. The extensive college archive has an unbroken history back to the foundation of the college in 1264, documenting college activities and the administration of the estates, including some Hebrew documents.

Foermer Bek's hall, in the front Merton quadrangle (staircases 6 & 7) was sold to Bishop Walter de Merton, the founder of Merton college, in a historic property deal, which meant that one of Oxford's Jews had participated in the foundation of Oxford's first true college. In 1266/7 the property was sold to the Bishop by an increasing infirm Jacob.

The contract (or starr) survives, and is written in both Latin by a scribe, and in Hebrew in the shaky and weak hand of Jacob.  It is the oldest collegiate document that survives. This document and other will be shown in this exclusive viewing.
