Israel Cuisine Shabbat Dinner

Prof. Eran Feitelson
Eran Feitelson is a professor at the department of geography of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Between 2003 and 2004, he chaired the Department. From 2004 to 2009, he was the Head of the Federmann School of Public Policy and Government. He also chaired the Israeli National Parks and Nature Reserves Council for ten years (1999-2009) and has been a member of numerous public committees. He holds an MA in Geography and Economics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a PhD from the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering of Johns Hopkins University. He has worked for the Israeli government, at the Environmental Protection Service and Ministry of Transportation between 1980 and 1985 and at APOGEE Research between 1989 and 1990. He has worked extensively on water policy issues and the management of transboundary water resources, particularly groundwater, as well as on environmental policy, transport policies and land use planning issues. He has edited or co-edited three books and authored over 50 papers in refereed journals and 20 chapters in edited volumes. He has participated in numerous planning teams, and has served as the scientific coordinator of Israel's first sustainable development strategy. In the 2009/10 academic year he is a visiting professor at the University of Oxford.

Gisela Feldman
Survivor of the S.S. St Louis, 1939
Gisela Feldman is a suvivor of the ill-fated ship S.S. St Louis that set sail from Germany to Cuba in 1939 with 930 Jews only to be turned back to Europe once it reached Havana. Gisele Feldan was one of the few who were allowed into England and survived the war. She recently flew to Miami for her first time to meet other survivors at the port where they were not allowed to enter by FDR Roosevelt due to American government quote on Jews during the Second World War.

Professor Siegbert Salomon Prawer FBA
‘Freud’s Jewish Comedy’
Siegbert Salomon Prawer, born 1925 in Cologne, Germany, is Emeritus Professor of German Language and Literature at the University of Oxford and Fellow of The Queen’s College, Oxford. He is the author of Caligari's Children: The Film as Tale of Terror (1980) and Breeches and Metaphysics: Thackeray's German Discourse (1997), among other books.
His most recent book is A Cultural Citizen of the World: Sigmund Freud's Knowledge and Use of British and American Writings, (Legenda, Oxford 2009) which is based on an intensive study of the original German text of Freud's writings, letters and journals. S. S. Prawer's new book is the first to make a full and systematic map of Freud's use of English literature the first to make a full and systematic map of Freud's use of English literature.

Dr. Paula Casal
Pula Casal is Reader in Political Theory at the School of Politics and International Relations, University of Reading, and former graduate student of Prof. Jerry Cohen in 1982 at UCL. She studied Philosophy at Oxford, and at the University of Complutense in Madrid. She has published in Spanish, German and Anglo-American journals on analytical marxism (the topic of her doctorate), environmental issues, global justice, animal rights, procreation, and the principle of fairness. She teaches the history of political thought, contemporary political theory, feminism, and environmental politics. During her Fellowship year at the Ethics Center she worked on a book, published by Oxford University Press, entitled Just Equality, that examines contemporary egalitarian With distinguished philosophers from across the university

Animal Rights in Israel

Yoel Hasson
Yoel Hasson is a member of the 18th Knesset. He is a rising star in Israeli politics and a prominent up-and-coming leader who is at the forefront of the legislative process.
MK Hasson is a member of the opposition Kadima Party and was first elected to serve as a member of the Knesset as its representative in March 2006 when he was only 33 years old. MK Hasson holds the prestigious position as the Chairman of the State Control Committee. The Committee is one of the most important committees within the legislative body tasked with overseeing and discussing reports issued by the State Comptroller's office, as well as establishing commissions of inquiry to examine the findings put forth from the State Comptroller.
In the 17th Knesset, MK Hasson served as the Chairman of the Coalition, Chairman of the Lobby for the Advancement of Young People in Israel and Chairman of the Lobby for the Protection of Animals. In June 2006, he was nominated as the President of the 35th World Zionist Congress. Prior to serving as an elected official, MK Hasson was an advisor to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and was part of his political staff.

Grave Challenges Facing Ritual Slaughter in Europe
Mr. Kesselman is Executive Coordinator of Union of Orthodox Congregations; Vice president for the campaign for protection of Shechita (Jewish ritual slaughter) and on executive board of Shechita UK. He has recently led the campaign in Europe against DIALREL (Dialogue on Religious Slaughter), set up by the European Commission to change current religious laws on slaughter.

Extermination Camp Sobibor: Past, Present, Future
Mr. Frank Van der Elst
Frank van der Elst studied at the University of Amsterdam and the New School University in New York. He holds a Bachelor in Cultural Studies and a Master in Holocaust and Genocide Studies. His specialism is the postwar history of the Nazi death camps Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka. Since early 2007 he is an active member of the Dutch Sobibor Foundation (Stichting Sobibor). The Sobibor Foundation tries to keep the memory of extermination camp Sobibor alive by organizing lectures, exhibitions, and trips to Poland.

Yiddish Course for Beginners
Jeremy Paton
Jeremy Paton, a fluent Yiddish speaker, graduated from University College London in 1989 with a BA in History. In summer 1992 he studied Yiddish at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, which included Yiddish grammar and Yiddish literature. His dissertation was entitled "Jews in Buenos Aires 1881-1955" which was based on a number of Yiddish sources, and he also wrote a paper entitled "The Jewish Labour Bund in Poland 1918-1939" and presented it to the conference on "Ashkenaz" in Cracow, Poland in 1998. This work was based on Yiddish and Polish primary sources from the 1920s and 1930s.
