Rabbi Yehudah Black - senior rabbi at Kenton Shul since August 2004. Previously he served as rabbi at United Hebrew Congregation of Newcastle upon Tyne, and as minister at Staines Synagogue. He was educated at Yeshivot in London, Israel and Montreal where he received Semichah from Rabbi Pinchas Hirschprung, Chief Rabbi of Montreal.

One of the most poignant moments of the High-Holiday prayers is the recital of the liturgical poem, Unessanneh Tokef. What is its significance? Who composed it, and under what circumstances?

Edna Freinkel, born in Johannesburg, is one of South Africa’s most influential women and a leading Jewish human rights activist and campaigner for the promotion of literacy in South African prisons. Freinkel has received numerous awards including the prestigious Counsellor of the Order of the Baobab, awarded by President Thabo Mbeki for lifelong dedication to upgrading learning in South Africa. She is founder of Rebecca Ostrowiak School of Reading in Germiston and her dedication to the cause of learning disabilities in South Africa has made a lasting impact on the lives of thousands of South Africans.

John Izbicki 

On the evening following his eighth birthday the terrors of Kristallnacht changed John Izbicki's life forever. Here he recounts the story of his escape from Germany and his arrival in Britain. John Izbicki was born to a Jewish family in Berlin, after escaping Germany he went on to lead a successful career as a British journalist. His memoir, Life Between the Lines, was published in 2012.

Professor Jonathan Wolf

Gerald (Jerry) A. Cohen was a Marxist political philosopher who held the positions of Quain Professor of Jurisprudence, University College London and Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory, All Souls College, Oxford. This lecture explores his life and thought beginning his Jewish communist upbringing in Montreal. Introduced by Rabbi Eli Brackman whom Jerry befriended during the last years of his life. Jonathan Wolff is Professor of Philosophy and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at University College London.

Guy Stroumsa is Martin Buber Professor Emeritus of Comparative Religion at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Professor of the Study of theAbrahamic Religions at the University of Oxford, where he is a Fellow of Lady Margaret Hall. He is a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
